 Suspension Tower, Mackinac Bridge photo by Mary Vee Labor Day is the one day each year the Mackinac Bridge is closed to all motor vehicle traffic from 6am to 12 noon. This annual event began back in 1958 The Mackinac Bridge is a suspension bridge connecting the lower peninsula of Michigan with the upper peninsula. To the east, Lake Huron flows, to the west, Lake Michigan The people who live on the north and south sides have a fun rivalry. Photo by Mary Starting the walk If one lives in the lower peninsula that person is called a troll because he/she lives "under" the bridge. If one lives in the upper peninsula, that person is called a Yooper, a distortion of the word upper. On Labor Day the Yoopers and Trolls along with a host of visitors walk the 5 mile Mackinac Bridge. Photo by Mary Vee Someone special is coming to your office or home. You rush about cleaning, preparing appropriate items (the project for the office situation, a meal for the home), and yourself. The person is due to arrive any minute. You look around and probably say, " Oh no, I forgot to--" Strangely enough, that one item you noticed at the last second stands out to you like a neon sign. You're convinced the guest sees it also. I mean why not? It's as clear as a red stain on white carpeting! To make matters worse, you didn't hear the last thing the guest said because thoughts of the undone inundated your mind. Should you ask them to repeat it, or try to figure it out contextually? Good grief!! On this wild and wacky note...Happy Labor Day to you! Whether your career has you raising children and endlessly cleaning your home, or you're a business person filling out form 207/J for the forty millionth time, this is your day to rest. D...

My friend, Rhonda, a former trucker. There are many thankless jobs that pay our bills. Today I want to honor the truck driver.  Thanks to the truckers, I can go to stores or shop online to buy products I want.  I must admit, other than hearing reminders on Sesame Street or Mr. Rogers of the lengthy process to get those products in my possession, I rarely think of those involved as I happily display, wear, consume, use, etc the product. I'd like to thank the truck drivers who sit in a moving monster of a vehicle for hours, moving the very item I want from a factory, farm field, ranch, etc. to the place where I could purchase it. And, of course, I also thank the truck driver who delivers my online purchases to my front door.  Dear Trucker, Without you I wouldn't have products I enjoy.
