Mary Vee here. One of my absolute favorite classes at ACFW this last year was the medical fiction class. That wasn't the real title, I can't remember what snazzy name the instructors gave it--BUT three stellar medical professionals, who are also Christian Fiction writers, presented great information then opened the time for questions. We students asked them all kinds of questions like what kind of poison would kill a ..., and tons of other questions. It was sooooo much fun, and informative.

I asked Candace, who was one of those fabulous teachers, to join us and share how God has led her on her writing journey. Here is what she said:

God Gave Me a Wake-up Fall

The story won’t surprise folks who have read my website bio, but I’ll start off with a brief recap of the 1997 incident that jumpstarted my writing journey. Though “jump” is hardly the right word. “Fall” is even a bit of a stretch. The painful truth is that I was catapulted from the back of a bucking thoroughbred and hit the ground like a pile driver, fracturing my back and seven ribs, bruising a lung, and breaking my neck in three places—causing partial paralysis of my dominant arm. The neurosurgeon said I was lucky; I’d come perilously close to the fate of Christopher Reeve.

I was an ER nurse strapped to a trauma gurney. It happened (I thought) with the worst possible timing. I’d only recently survived the painful and unexpected loss of a 24-year marriage, followed by a flood that threatened my home. I prided myself on resilience then injuries threatened my career. My life, I wailed, had become the lyrics to a bad country song.

But God had a plan.

He used the long weeks in physical rehab to heal my spirit as well as my body. He gently taught me the difference between a “strong” woman and a woman of “strength.” That difference is faith.

God wasn’t finished.

The inspirational account of my injury and recovery, “By Accident,” was selected for Chicken Soup for the Nurse’s Soul and became my first published work.

And God kept calling.

Since then, I have been immensely blessed to team with Tyndale House publishers to bring readers exciting and soul-stirring medical fiction: The Mercy Hospital series, Grace Medical series, and now By Your Side, the first story in my new Crisis Team series. My long career in emergency medicine has, of course, provided much story material. But so have my personal challenges. In Disaster Status, the nurse heroine must learn the true source of her strength; the breath-catching action of Code Triage unfolds as the clock ticks toward the hero and heroine’s divorce; and San Antonio-set Trauma Plan features a nurse whose career has been sidelined by spinal injuries. Write what you know. And, yes, the skydiving scene in Trauma Plan was from personal experience, too!

Nearly two decades after God gave me that dramatic “wake up fall,” I am still amazed at what He set in motion that day. And I’m so very, very grateful. I love that I’m often called the author of “medical hope opera”.  Hope, after all, is amazing medicine.

Candace Calvert is a former ER nurse who believes love, laughter and faith are the best medicines. Her Mercy Hospital, Grace Medical, and Crisis Team series offer readers a chance to "scrub in" on the exciting world of emergency medicine—along with a soul-soothing prescription for hope. Wife, mother, and very proud grandmother, she makes her home in northern California.

She loves to hear from her readers!

ER nurse Macy Wynn learned essential, gritty lessons in the California foster care system: land on your feet and trust no one. She’s finally located the fellow foster child she loves like a sister, but the girl’s in deep trouble. Macy’s determined to help, no matter what it takes. Her motto is to “make it happen” in any situation life throws at her—even when she butts heads with an idealistic cop.

Deputy Fletcher Holt believes in a higher plan, the fair outcome—and his ability to handle that by himself if necessary. Now he’s been yanked from Houston, his mother is battling cancer, and he’s attracted to a strong-willed nurse who could be the target of a brutal sniper.

When everything goes wrong, where do they put their trust?

Hi ladies, thanks for sharing Candace!

Once again, Mary, thanks so much for hsoting me. It's very comfy here. :-)

Hi Patty! Nice to see you. To answer your question, yes I was able to go back to emergency nursing. Thankfully, the damage to my arm wasn't permanent. I'm retired now and write full time. And, thanks to a God of second chances, have married a wonderful man and count my blessings daily. I love sharing stories that offer both an adrenaline rush of excitment AND a soothing measure of hope. I welcome you to "scrub in."

Thanks so much for stopping by today.

Hello Mary and Candace. Very, very interesting post. Candace you are blessed to make it through all of that. BUT, He wasn't ready for you yet for you had unfinished business. Was thinking how when you most times hear of a broken neck someone dies. Glad wasn't true many times, tho time like Reeves were sad and best friend of my son who was paralyzed up to his neck when he was in his 20s diving in where the water wasn't deep enough. He had practically grew up in and out of our home. Wondering if you ever got full use of your arm again. I sure hope so. I would love to win your book. You are new to me. Thanks Mary for having Candace as your guest, Maxie > mac262(at)me(dot)com <
Hi Maxie,
How are you this evening? I was hoping to chat with you today.
My hubby who works in an emergency room tells of the times when patients live through amazing accidents and times when someone is seriously injured in a seemingly small incident. We just never know. I'm thankful God protected Candace and enabled her to become the fabulous writer she is.
I'm also thankful for people like you who visit with us.
Have a great day, Maxie. Looking forward to seeing you again.

Melissa,
Thanks so much for joining us today!
What is special to me about Candace's experience is the huge amount of excitement, drama, thrill, suspense..the emergency room has tons of fodder for her writing. Her books are awe-some!
I am so glad I could meet you today and look forward to your next visit.
Jane,
Good early morning to you, girl. The sun wasn't even up when you helped me to start the virtual coffee.

Thanks for stopping by Cindy, and for the kind words. Mary: I didn't realize your husband is "part of the team." I love it. :-)

So nice to meet you, Maxie. Ah, yes, spinal injuries are so frightening. I hope your son's friend did well with rehab; so many wonderful advances are being made now. Much of that because of Chris Reeves' dedication to the effort. Interestingly, my agent Natasha Kern also suffered a broken neck. And she, like I, was blessed with full recovery. Every year I gift her with a contribution in her honor to the Chris & Dana Reeve Fund. Best of luck with the giveaway and thank you for your interest in my work.

I was introduced to Laura at an ACFW conference by my a fellow Writer's Alley Cat writer. Immediately I saw Laura's gracious spirit. It's been about two years since and I thought of that Christlike spirit when I noticed her new book release. I asked Laura to share with us the journey God has led her on for her writing career. Of course she graciously agreed. Here is what she said: You Were Born For Nothing Less Thanks so much for having me here, Mary. It’s always a joy to revisit my writing journey as it stays fresh and is always humbling to think how God led me to this place.  In a nutshell… I’ve written stories – historical fiction only – since I was seven years old. I think I came into the world hardwired to write. I didn’t

It happened the moment I read Gone With the Wind at the age of twelve. The instant that Scarlett seared Rhett with a look on the winding staircase of Twelve Oaks, I was hooked, and my “romance-writing career” began with a 150-page, single-spaced ms. entitled When Tomorrow C

Mary here.     I asked Terri: how has God led  you on your writing journey? Here is what she said:   Dreams God Has for Me Thank you Mary for hosting me today. When America was attacked in September 2011, the world changed. I remember my heart hurt for those who had suffered and died. I thought how could my writing ever mean anything to anyone when there were more important issues going on in the world.  I had been writing and trying to publish for eight years at that point and was getting discouraged. I had begun to think maybe it was time to let the dream of publishing go.  A few weeks after 9/11 my women’s Bible study went for a weekend retreat to the beach. The theme of the retreat was Dream Big. Throughout the weekend I kept wondering what God would want me to dream
