Mary here. Andrea has had an amazing journey. One many of us can relate to. Her post below shows her strength and positive spirit. I'm so happy Andrea is visiting with us today. Pull up a chair, grab your coffee and come chat with Andrea. I asked Andrea to tell us how God led her on her writing journey. Here is what she said:

Romance Done Write

I didn’t read much while growing up in my family’s suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin home. I read what I was assigned for school, along with an occasional children’s novel like Pippi Longstocking and Little House in the Big Woods

When I was in fourth grade, I wrote my first novel, Little Miss Mouse. My mother kept it all these years and it’s now in my possession. I laugh when I read those ten handwritten pages. At the time, it was a laborious undertaking and it seemed as though I’d penned 200 pages. In junior high, I read The Saracen Lamp—probably the only novel I read at that age, but I still enjoyed writing stories and plays and singing folk songs with my guitar.

Shortly after graduating high school, I married my sweetheart. We’ve been married nearly forty years and raised three sons. When my boys were young, I became an avid romance novel reader. My best friend lived across the street and I often traded books with her and she recommended authors to me—authors like Shirley Busbee, LaVyrle Sprencer, and Kathleen E. Woodewiss.

Soon I had ideas about writing my own romance novel. I signed up for a creative writing class at the local university, and learned some textbook techniques. My sons grew up to the sound of electric typewriter keys and the smell of Wite-Out correction fluid as I wrote and rewrote my many stories.

It wasn’t until the fall of 1990 when I attended a workshop in Oak Brook, Illinois, led by Dr. Dennis Hensley, that I learned Christians wrote novels—and romances! I could not for the life of me, figure out how someone claiming to be a Christian could write romance. To me, the word romance was synonymous with explicit sex.

How wrong I was! But that initial, naĆÆve question eventually led me to a saving knowledge of Christ. Not only did I read Dr. Hensley’s novel, but I read books by Louise Gouge, Lori Wick, and Elaine Schulte too. Their stories helped me understand the meaning of true faith and love--and, yes, romance.

In 1994, my first novel was published by Barbour Publishing’s Heartsong Presents line—a Christian romance. Since then, I’ve written thirty novels. They have been published by Christian companies such as Barbour Publishing, Summerside Press, Guideposts, Charisma House, Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas, Prism Book Group, and Kregel Publications.

For me, reading Christian romance led me (and ultimately led my sons and husband) to Jesus.

Now that’s what I call ā€œromance done write!ā€

In the autumn of 1864, spirited Carrie Ann Bell is searching for her runaway sister in the heart of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. Disguised as a Yankee soldier, she stumbles into a skirmish near Front Royal—and instead of her sister, she finds trouble.

Colonel Peyton Collier of the Union cavalry division arrests her for impersonating an
officer, but protects her from worse consequences. Soon the Southern girl finds herself drawn to the chivalrous Yankee horseman, discovering that her foe has become her ally—and more than that, someone she could love.

But Carrie has promised to keep a dark secret, never suspecting that her silence might threaten the life of the gallant Colonel who holds her—and her heart—captive.

Thanks for the interview and great giveaway! I love how Christian romances can bring so many people to Christ, whether they are the ones reading them or writing them! In middle school my best friends at church and I started reading the Christy Miller series by Robin Jones Gunn. Those books really helped me grow as a young Christian girl. It's really a series you can grow up with because it chronicles the lives of Christy and her friends from middle school through their married years. I highly recommend them for your granddaughters!

Hi Connie!
Don't you just love to read "the rest of the story?" Hope you stop by again. Each weekend an author shares how God has led them on their journey. Great blessings.

I know!! Doesn't Andrea's story sound awesome? Definitely a page turner. So glad you could join Andrea and myself today!
Ah, a historical reader. What better way to dive into the past, learn a bit about history, and God's love. I'm with you, Virginia.
Hi, Laurie,
Who knows, maybe you and Andrea know each other in some way.
I like when authors show their gift of words, too. Those three words. Humor and depth in one phrase.
Thanks for stopping by this weekend, Laurie. Loved chatting with you.
Hi Ann,
It's a bit chilly out here. We've moved in closer to the fireplace. I always enjoy your visits.
Hi Kim!
Hope all is well with you. So glad you came to our chat. Did you notice how many people came at the same time. Love when we have these get togethers. Thanks for coming.
Hi Stella!
So nice to meet you. Did you know in a room full of writers there will be about half who didn't love reading as a child and half who did? And yet both halves produce great writers who love to read. I'm so glad you stopped by to visit with Andrea and me today.
Hi Linda,
I really enjoyed chatting with you today. We have plenty of virtual coffees and pastries. Stick around and enjoy the gang here. Andrea and I love to meet new people!

Before I gave my life to Christ, I read secular romances (Harlequin) and the steamier the better. But after I became a Christian those stories started to become sickening to me. I love romance books but I just couldn't stomach the world's view of what they considered "romance" (explicit sex scenes). I think Lori Wick was one of the first authors I discovered who wrote Christian fiction. I truly knew what inspirational romance was really suppose to be after that & I was hooked! God centered love where the couple seek Him in their relationship & a sweet romance develops! After that I discovered so many other genres (Amish, Historical & Suspence) and I will read NOTHING but Christian :-) Now I have a bookshelf packed with various books and authors plus my Kindle!!

I loved reading the author interview & how Christian romance lead your family to Christ! That is just the neatest thing :-) Thanks for sharing your journey with us, Andrea, such an inspiring story....blessings to you as you write (and read) for His glory and our reading pleasure! Thank you for the chance to win a copy of "A Thousand Shall Fall", sounds like a great book!

I know. This is such an awesome way to make friends!
Deanne,
Such a joy to see you today. There are a lot of historical books out there, but you're right, not many on the Civil War. I was at a bookstore today, taking in the wonderful scent and thumbing through real live pages. OOOOOO I loved it!!
Now that we know Andrea wrote a Civil War book we can really look forward to reading this one and future books of hers.
So glad you stopped by today!
Hey, Trixi! So nice to see you today.
You are another testimony to the benefits of Christian fiction. My one shelf has grown to more than two full of wonderful Christian fiction books. Aren't they fun to reread? Even the second time the thought comforts or strikes my heart, leading me to some good for Christ.
I love chatting with you. And look forward to your next visit.
Hi MaryAnn!
Yeah! Another civil war reader! This was such an important time in our history. I imagine, if Andrea were up to it, she could spend the rest of her life just writing stories from that period of time. So much happened. So many possibilities.
I loved chatting with you, Maryann!!
Connie,
What a fabulous idea. I have found that a request for a book not in the library is usually met with the same book being bought and added. Thank you so much for doing that. We could all help our favorite authors in this way.
Blessings on you as well, Connie!
Loved chatting with you.

Hi Patty!
Yah know, God knows the exact way each of us need to respond to his calling. Doesn't mean that everyone will. But God puts in place the right incident so that all may come to know Him. Isn't He a loving God? Loved chatting with your, Patty.
Janice,
I'm curious, too. Maybe someday she'll post it on her website.
So glad you had time to stop by, Janice!!

Suzanne Woods Fisher - Overcoming the Fear of Failure

We've all had something fail. Maybe a school assignment, baking a cake, changing a car tire. Well that was my shortlist confession. There really is a mile long list that you don't want to hear.  Talk about a quick drive to the blues. Even one negative comment in a barrel full of praises can take us down. Sigh. Why oh why do we remember the one negative one and forget the positives.  You are not alone. We all do this. But there is a way of escape. Today, Suzanne Woods Fisher is going to share her story. The Fear of Failure ā€œFor I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you. Do not fear; I will help youā€ (Isaiah 41:13, niv).              Years ago, before I received my first book contract, an editor returned a manuscript to me with the comment that the writing wasn’t up to her publishing house’s ā€œcaliber.ā€  Ouch!  That was a tough remark to swal...

A Memory Device For You

Photo Courtesy Recently I added a memory game to my week's activities.  It all started when I listened to one of those fabulous sermons in church and actually took notes. Later in the week, I recalled liking the sermon and searched for the notes, but lamented when I couldn't find the piece of paper. I quizzed myself: What was the general topic? I racked my brain…good grief this was Thursday and a thousand other things had happened when I asked the question. After a cup of tea, visualizing where I sat in the sanctuary, and using every other means possible to remember the general topic I finally answered the question.  The process to recall the rest of the good things said was an epic fail.  Although I have since started using a notebook I have created a memory game. On Monday, at any point during the day, I try to say the following without the use of my notes: General topic of the sermon Main book of the Bible used  Application p...

Laughter and Singing at the Homeless Shelter

It was a night to remember. A night to tell friends about. So I am... Fifty men, women, and teens rode in busses on icy expressways into the inner city. They poured out of the bus at a homeless shelter unsure where to go, what to do, or what to say. One led the pack through the main doors, pass security checkpoints, and on through winding hallways to a large room. At night, this room is filled, wall to wall, with cots, blankets, and at this time of year, cold homeless men, women, and children. On this evening before the night, hundreds of chairs formed straight rows and faced a platform.   The fifty set up sound and instrument equipment. Singers cozied in the limited platform space. Instrumentalists tuned their instruments.  A few residents poked their heads in the door. Intrigued, they came in and watched the first measures of several songs start, stop, start again. Microphone levels adjusted. The singers laughed. Chattered. The group stepped off to the side and...
