I felt honored and blessed to meet Beth at ACFW. I'd seen her presence at My Book Therapy, spoke with her on FB, but really understood her tremendous gift as a writer, teacher, mentor, and friend when I met her at the conference.

I asked Beth to share how God has led her on her journey. This is what she answered:

When Life Doesn’t Go According to Plan: Things Change … And So Do I

Every novel wrestles with a Story Question – the great “what if?” of the heart and mind. The Story Question for my second novel, Catch a Falling Star, crystallized quickly: What do you do when life doesn’t go according to plan? There were many versions of this question woven into the story:

·      What if your dreams of motherhood elude you?
·      What if Mr. Right keeps turning into Mr. Wrong?
·      What if your career crashes and burns?

The catalyst for Catch a Falling Star was a conversation with a friend whose life, while successful in lots of ways, lacked some of her lifelong dreams. She wrestled not only with “what if?” but “what now?”

Everyone faces life not going according to plan – and that’s one of the reasons I believe readers will connect with Catch a Falling Star. Yes, it’s a romance – but it’s a real life romance.

Here’s the funny thing: As I focused on my deadline, I forgot that whole “life not going according to plan” reality applied to me too.

At first it was little things disrupting my schedule. I joked that I was learning to write through the interruptions in my life, not in spite of them. Ha ha – no big deal.

Then the back pain flared up. Okay, that happens. I have a “wonky” back. At times it degenerates into a “wretched” back. But I keep on writing. I walk on my treadmill – sometimes writing at the same time, thanks to the “tread-desk” my husband made for me. I do yoga – avoiding any and all poses that might recreate the double black eyes I sported for almost a month after trying the “Crow” position.

This time? The pain went from “wonky” to “wretched” to “now I’m immobilized to the point I can’t sit up … I can’t get in my bed … and I can’t think to write a word, much less a scene.”

Wonderful.

Did I mention I was on deadline?

I couldn’t write for 10 days. Ten days. You know that whole “ticking time bomb” element screenwriters put in movies to build tension? I had a virtual “tick, tick, tick” inside my head, ratcheting up my anxiety and doing nothing to relieve my pain.

My life wasn’t going according to plan. The question was: What was I going to do?

I admitted there was nothing I could do to fix my back. I couldn’t regain those writing days. I took the advice of two trusted mentors and accepted I wasn’t going to meet my deadline. And then I called my agent and talked about an extension.

My agent was understanding – and handled the request for me.

My editor was understanding – and granted the request.

And I had to be understanding – gracious – to myself. Missing the deadline wasn’t the end of the world, even though my former-editor self wanted to react like it was. I realized if I could have met my deadline, I would have. When life doesn’t go according to plan that means things in my life change – and that I have to change too.

What do you do when life doesn’t go according to plan?

What do I do when life doesn't go according to plan? Are we talking before or after the angry outburst? Or the wilt away and hide Neither seem to help much so now, most of the time, I cry out to God. I ask for help and prayer from the faithful. I cling to past promises fulfilled and hope, hope, hope that God still does love me and will somehow, someway, "work all things together for good. . ." Thanks, Beth! AnnieVZ84@gmail.com

Great post, Beth! Sometimes the lessons we teach our characters are the very ones we need to learn ourselves during the writing process. God is pretty awesome that way.
Oh, what an awesome picture of you two!! I love it!

What do I do when life doesn't go according to plan? Just go with the flow. If the last few years has taught me anything, it is to relax and let God be God. To thank Him for the trials, hardships, and bumps in the road. They will always be there....but then so will HE. :)

I love you both, Beth and Mary! You both have the most precious hearts!

I understand completely!! At younger age had my life all planned how it would go. Things change!! Found had a spine disease and then my last cervical spine surgery, there was a medical error and now I'm disabled. God's good all the time! He's with me through everything! Thank you Beth for this great interview!

I think we all have our own "usual" response. The strength comes from doing exactly what you said, Ann, crying out to God. And I can assure you, from His Word that He does indeed love you:)
Thanks so much for joining us today.
I think you have a good point Carla. We have the whole world worth of problems to choose for our book, yet we hover in on one. God IS pretty awesome that way. :)
Thanks for stopping by Carla.
Thanks for your input, Sherrinda. Going with the flow shows strength in your walk with Christ. What a great testimony you are. Thanks for stopping by today. Loved chatting with you.
Barb,
You are a tower of strength. God has something awesome for you and will continue to stay by your side the whole time. What a wonderful testimony you shared in this short comment.
So sorry for your back problems, Beth.

I know all to well the "when life doesn't go according to plan" thingy. Only mine would probably be titled: when I choose differently from God, what do I expect? But He is the God of 2nd chances, and finally find myself on His road...even so, there will be days when things don't go according to plan, but now I trust that He is in charge and try to roll with it.

Patricia,
So nice to chat with you today. I think your experience sums it up. We need to find ourselves on HIs road and realize things do go according to plan.
Trusting He is in charge is so hard....but truly the best.
Thanks for your comment, Patricia.

Ann, I love that God loves me before, during, and after my angry outburst ... or my sulking ... or my whining. And yes, his promises give me hope during the times when life takes a detour.
Beth K. Vogt said…
Absolutely agree, Carla -- and it's proving true with book #3 too!

Sending you a hug, Sherrinda!
And I love your attitude -- Let God be God! Amen!
Beth K. Vogt said…
Barbara, that would be some tough circumstances to walk through -- but you've chosen to trust God through it all. It sounds as if you are a woman of strong faith.
Beth K. Vogt said…
Pat -- Yes! Sometimes life doesn't go according to plan because of choices I make ... or choices someone else makes ... but God is the God of 2nd chances and U-turns ... Grace!

I don't always react real well when things don't go as planned. I do eventually turn to God for help. I'm trying to be more in tune with God so that my first response is talking with him, asking him for help. Maybe someday I'll get there!
Thanks for sharing your story, Beth. I hope your back problems will be infrequent. I'm looking forward to reading Catch a Falling Star. I really enjoyed your first book. Thanks for giving away a book.

Hi, Pam: I'm trying to adjust my first responses too -- to trust God first, second, third ... to not fret or doubt.
And I'm so glad you enjoyed Wish You Were Here!

When things don't go as planned I usually have a bit of time of being down. Then I try to find a level of acceptance which allows me to move forward from the new place. Prayer definitely helps along with talking with friends or family.

Lately my computer has been having difficulties. I did not get to post a comment, Mary, but I have been praying about your mom and her transition. Hope all is well for you all.

Blessings, Janice jsmithg(at)hotmail(dot)com

hello girls. it was good to listen to you girl's conversation. I know I want to win this book. I like about the never door.
Please enter me in this for a chance to win. MAXIE mac262(at)me)dot)com
I think we all have trouble with turning to God first. Our first instinct is to react. Like you I have tried to train myself over the years to speak with God first before I open my mouth. I do remember ... sometimes. :)

What a joy to chat with you today, Pam.
Aww, Janice, you are so sweet. Thanks for letting me know you're praying about my mom. Like everyone said, there already is sparks of good coming from it. I need to be patient and trust God for His loving care for her.

Having the down time, as you mentioned, is so wise. This is a time God could speak with you. What a great idea.

Thanks so much for joining our conversation today. :)
Maxie,
I always look forward to your visits. So nice to see you again. And you are part of our "girl conversation." :)
GUESS WHAT, ALL! I finished Beth's book, Catch a Falling Star this morning. Oh, man, it is sooooo good. I will be putting up my review of the book on Wednesday. Come back to read it.

Hi, Janice: I agree -- you have to allow some down time when there's been disappointment. I don't think God wants us to hide our feelings from him -- and after all, he knows our hearts better than we do. So we can't hide things from him anyway.

Hi -- I've learned to like the "Never" door too. ;O)

I'm so excited to read this! I usually pout when life doesn't go according to plan, then I pray for a better attitude! shopgirl152nykiki(at)yahoo(dot)com
Hi Veronica, so nice to see you again.
I think God doesn't mind the pouting, He is so kind and understanding. But even better is praying afterwards. He loves talking to us and He's really good at listening, too. :)

Beth, I could read your writing all day long. I appreciate this post that gives permission to give into life and also demonstrates gracefulness while doing it. I can breathe easier being reminded the world goes on and I'm okay even when I don't accomplish Plan A. There are always Plans B through Z. :)

Mary and Beth: You ladies are awesome!!! Both of you have really blessed me this weekend!!!
Thanks Kim. So nice to see you here today.
I usually find myself in plan C and trickling down to plan Y. It adds so much flavor to my life and provides oodles of fodder for books:)
There are also the days when singing Annie's song "The sun will come out tomorrow" helps, too.
Oh and heres another..."One day at a time."
These are all the ones I keep telling myself when sinking in the mire. God is here with me but He still wants me to try my best. He loves us so very much.

One of my absolute favorite classes at ACFW this last year was the medical fiction class. That wasn't the real title, I can't remember what snazzy name the instructors gave it--BUT three stellar medical professionals, who are also Christian Fiction writers, presented great information then opened the time for questions. We students asked them all kinds of questions like what kind of poison would kill a ..., and tons of other questions. It was sooooo much fun, and informative.     I asked Candace, who was one of those fabulous teachers, to join us and share  how God has led her on her writing journey. I asked Andrea to tell us how God led her on her writing journey. Here is what she said:  Romance Done Write I didn’t read much while growing up in my family’s suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin home. I read what I was assigned for school, along with an occasional children’s novel like Pippi Longstocking and Little House in the Big Woods .  When I was in fourth grade, I wrote my first novel, Little Miss Mouse . My mother kept it all these years and it’s now in my possession. I laugh when I read those ten handwritten pages. At the tim...

Fabulous Friday Feature-Lorna Seilstad

Today we welcome author: Lorna Seilstad One commenter will win a copy of Lorna's book:  As Love Blooms Scroll down to see how. Mary here. I have quickly learned what an amiable person Lorna is. After only a few emails we've become great friends and found similar things to talk about. You'll see this same spirit in her post below. I asked Lorna to tell us how God led her on her writing journey. Here is what she said:  Excuses! Excuses! Moses and I have a lot in common. Oh, I haven’t led any Egyptians out of bondage, but I have looked at the path God laid out for me and rattled off excuses that would rival those of the great spiritual leader himself. You’re probably familiar with the story. God gets Moses’ attention with a burning bush, and then when He begins to disclose his plans for Moses’ future, the excuses start. ( My paraphrase of the story:) “Moses, I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people ou...
