When We Must Do That Which We Don't Want To Do

"For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do." Romans 7:15 NKJV

My dad and mom, 1978
This verse came to mind today. It is on my heart for a different reason than the Apostle Paul's context intended.

There are time when we must do the things we don't want to do. I'm not talking about eating vegetables, doing chores, or taking medicines. This task is one that tugs at my heart strings.

Today, my sister and I are taking our mom to a nursing home. My mom, a sweet Christian lady, has dementia and it is worsening at a marked rate. Only a week ago, Mom said, "I don't want to go to a nursing home." Yesterday she did not remember I came and spent the whole afternoon with her, taking her out on the patio to listen to the birds and watch the squirrels.

My sister and I have been caring for Mom since last November, increasing the number of visits each day and the amount of time as well.

But it is now time. She can not be expected to live on her own any more, not safely.

If you would, pray for my mom that she would not feel sad, abandoned, or physically hurt. My sister and I have no intentions to decrease our visits. She deserves it. We want to participate in her care and are thankful there will be professionals to monitor her.

My sister and I are expecting to have a meltdown after we leave. Our only consolation is God's prevision of a bed in the nursing home at the exact time she needed it.

There are many things we must do that we don't want to do. God gives us friends, neighbors, family members, coworkers, church family for the physical hugs. He gives us his beautiful creation for his spiritual hugs.

So to help me find a comfort, I work best with distraction. How can I pray for your needs?

What a difficult time for you and your sister. Is your mother close to where you are in Michigan? Your sister too? I hope you all adjust well, that she will settle in and enjoy her new surroundings and you and sis feel good about the care she is receiving.

Thank you, Beth. I sure appreciate it.

Very nice tribute to Mom, Sis. Each day is getting better and it's only day three. God is Good! Myra
All the time.
All the time, God is good.
Thanks, My, for all you've done.

I appreciate both you and Myra, for all you two have done. Most of which mom is not able to remember...we thank you. Just a month ago, Mom and I were scheming different things we might do on my visit this summer for her birthday. This illness has progressed very fast, not giving time for it to fully mature in my thoughts. Mary, thank you for this blog, where we can share imprints of our hearts.
Thank you,
Marcia
Thanks, sis.
You would have done the same if you lived closer.
Looking forward to you all coming for a visit:)

One of my absolute favorite classes at ACFW this last year was the medical fiction class. That wasn't the real title, I can't remember what snazzy name the instructors gave it--BUT three stellar medical professionals, who are also Christian Fiction writers, presented great information then opened the time for questions. We students asked them all kinds of questions like what kind of poison would kill a ..., and tons of other questions. It was sooooo much fun, and informative.     I asked Candace, who was one of those fabulous teachers, to join us and share  how God has led her on her writing journey. Here is what she said: God Gave Me a Wake-up Fall The story won’t surprise folks who hav...

I asked Andrea to tell us how God led her on her writing journey. Here is what she said:  Romance Done Write I didn’t read much while growing up in my family’s suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin home. I read what I was assigned for school, along with an occasional children’s novel like Pippi Longstocking and Little House in the Big Woods .  When I was in fourth grade, I wrote my first novel, Little Miss Mouse . My mother kept it all these years and it’s now in my possession. I laugh when I read those ten handwritten pages. At the tim...

Fabulous Friday Feature-Lorna Seilstad

Today we welcome author: Lorna Seilstad One commenter will win a copy of Lorna's book:  As Love Blooms Scroll down to see how. Mary here. I have quickly learned what an amiable person Lorna is. After only a few emails we've become great friends and found similar things to talk about. You'll see this same spirit in her post below. I asked Lorna to tell us how God led her on her writing journey. Here is what she said:  Excuses! Excuses! Moses and I have a lot in common. Oh, I haven’t led any Egyptians out of bondage, but I have looked at the path God laid out for me and rattled off excuses that would rival those of the great spiritual leader himself. You’re probably familiar with the story. God gets Moses’ attention with a burning bush, and then when He begins to disclose his plans for Moses’ future, the excuses start. ( My paraphrase of the story:) “Moses, I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people ou...
