My One Sheet - Made at an ACFW Chapter Meeting

I'm taking a deep breath as I reveal my one sheet for the ACFW conference only two weeks away.  The Michigan chapter of ACFW held a one day session in August to teach us how to make our one sheets. Many, many tweaks later, I had this product.

It's really important to connect with others in your field. We all seem to have a bit of knowledge about at least one topic. Going to classes, sessions, meetings, gatherings, whatever you want to call them, is a great opportunity to meet people with similar interests and have something to share with you. Of course, you, in turn, have an opportunity to share back.

At the Michigan ACFW One Sheet session, I also met people who previously only had a tiny icon photo on the Internet. I read their posts, but didn't know anything else about them. These men and women became real. I heard their voice, their laughter, and saw their personality. What a treasure.

Friend, what group has benefitted you? Where have you physically met people who have the same interest as you? Not allowed to say "church" that is too vague. But you can mention a specific group in the church if you want.

This time I will mention my mom's group. She absolutely loved going to the Winning Women's conferences because she loved to sing with and hear thousands of women sing Christian songs. She also enjoyed the speakers.

Your turn:

Mary, your one sheet looks amazing! Well done, my friend.

Let's see, groups. I have a group of friends. I call them my Go Through Life friends. We've been doing life together for a few years now, and it's been pretty special.

I haven't figured out how to squeeze in time to join other groups right now. :)

Wonderful one-sheet, Mary! Looks like a great book. :)

Groups that have benefited me: The My Book Therapy team, for sure. Oh my goodness, becoming a part of that group changed my writing and my life. My craft partner and I have also teamed up with another CP pair to form a little group...and it's been so encouraging and supportive.

YES! Your One Sheet is perfect! It certainly makes me want to read your book. "Bravo and Encore! We must see more. May this be the first of many!"

The Mary V for Victory Cheering Sqaud has been positively moved today. :-)

I have enjoyed being a part of WMU at my church and attending the statewide Spring Event conference and the Fall Prayer Retreat. It has only been a couple of years that I have attended but it has been an incredible experience. I also enjoy our weekly prayer group at church and a monthly virtual prayer group call with CWA of Georgia. And I love the folks at Wanders Views WordPress blog which migrated together after World Magazine shut down WorldMag blog. These are all supportive groups with which I have been blessed to be a member.
Sometimes restricting ourselves to a few groups makes life peaceful and fun. You get to pour more of yourself into those special few groups.
Love the name of your group of friends :) Very descriptive.
Thank you, Melissa.

Great things have come from small crit groups. Shall we name some. Let's see there is C.S. Lewis and J.R. Tolkien, um, there is one on the east coast of the U.S. Any way, these treasured small groups start with a few pieces of typed pages and nothing published and soared to best sellers!.
I am truly blessed, Janice.
What an awesome friend you've become. :)

The best part of reading a comment like yours is the ...And...I also...
Your enthusiasm just bursts from this comment. What a fun and active time you are having!

Love the one-sheet, Mary! Looks great! YES, how beneficial not to mention fun it is to hang out with writerly types! I love the broad appeal of the ACFW with so many, many people sharing such a wide variety of experiences. But even better is the cozy warmth of my critique group--where I met you, Mary--who sprang up from the larger Scribes group. I also meet monthly with a very local group of writers who write everything under the sun. There's NOTHING like the camaraderie of sharing with like-minded buddies!
Totally!

My older daughter left for her Masters program at college. She called, practically crying with joy. "Mom, they speak my language!" And then the 3 hour review of her first day. Yup. It is a good thing to be with like-minded people.

I know I've mentioned my writing group, but the group that has supported me the most in my life right now is my Christian homeschool co-op. Mom's support nights, mom's/dad's night out, curriculum swapping, mom's prayer, weekly kid's classes, sports groups...because of this group I have not felt in the least like my kids are missing out on socialization and because I'm so blessed by it I joined the board for the co-op a few years ago in the hopes to give back at least a little.

Suzanne Woods Fisher - Overcoming the Fear of Failure

We've all had something fail. Maybe a school assignment, baking a cake, changing a car tire. Well that was my shortlist confession. There really is a mile long list that you don't want to hear.  Talk about a quick drive to the blues. Even one negative comment in a barrel full of praises can take us down. Sigh. Why oh why do we remember the one negative one and forget the positives.  You are not alone. We all do this. But there is a way of escape. Today, Suzanne Woods Fisher is going to share her story. The Fear of Failure ā€œFor I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you. Do not fear; I will help youā€ (Isaiah 41:13, niv).              Years ago, before I received my first book contract, an editor returned a manuscript to me with the comment that the writing wasn’t up to her publishing house’s ā€œcaliber.ā€  Ouch!  That was a tough remark to swal...

A Memory Device For You

Photo Courtesy Recently I added a memory game to my week's activities.  It all started when I listened to one of those fabulous sermons in church and actually took notes. Later in the week, I recalled liking the sermon and searched for the notes, but lamented when I couldn't find the piece of paper. I quizzed myself: What was the general topic? I racked my brain…good grief this was Thursday and a thousand other things had happened when I asked the question. After a cup of tea, visualizing where I sat in the sanctuary, and using every other means possible to remember the general topic I finally answered the question.  The process to recall the rest of the good things said was an epic fail.  Although I have since started using a notebook I have created a memory game. On Monday, at any point during the day, I try to say the following without the use of my notes: General topic of the sermon Main book of the Bible used  Application p...

Laughter and Singing at the Homeless Shelter

It was a night to remember. A night to tell friends about. So I am... Fifty men, women, and teens rode in busses on icy expressways into the inner city. They poured out of the bus at a homeless shelter unsure where to go, what to do, or what to say. One led the pack through the main doors, pass security checkpoints, and on through winding hallways to a large room. At night, this room is filled, wall to wall, with cots, blankets, and at this time of year, cold homeless men, women, and children. On this evening before the night, hundreds of chairs formed straight rows and faced a platform.   The fifty set up sound and instrument equipment. Singers cozied in the limited platform space. Instrumentalists tuned their instruments.  A few residents poked their heads in the door. Intrigued, they came in and watched the first measures of several songs start, stop, start again. Microphone levels adjusted. The singers laughed. Chattered. The group stepped off to the side and...
