Book Review: Anita Higman's "Winter in Full Bloom"

I turned the last page of Winter in Full Bloom and simply had to tell you about this book.

I don't post a review of every book I read. I wouldn't waste you time making you wade through a rant about something I didn't like or a monologue attempting to convince not only you but myself why a book needed to be read.

Nope.

I will only post book reviews on this site of those that tickled my fancy in some way.

This book made the cut.

From the exceptional lovely cover (see photo) to the name of her characters, Lily Winter--isn't that a picturesque name and so matching of the cover, to the guided tour to the best of Australia, this book doesn't miss any opportunity to provide what any reader wants in a cozy read.

One of the greatest components of this story is Higman's writing craft. I especially enjoyed her fresh descriptive phrases that leap off the page like: "The rain clouds let go in a big way as if the angels were pelting us with millions of water balloons."  Can you picture it? Crystal clear, right? This and others are appropriately sprinkled throughout the book. I'd tell you more, but wouldn't want to rob you of seeing them for yourself.

Winter in Full Bloom is Lily's story of resolution. Lily's husband dies leaving her empty nest feeling like an abandoned cave. To make matters worse, she discovers her husband has\d been unfaithful in his last days. Hungry for family relationships, Lily hopes to find an ember of friendship with her mother, but to no avail. Yet during the visit to the cold mansion she once called home, her mother reveals Lily has a twin sister. The only clue to the sister's location is a short note from Melbourne, Australia.

Lily's search for her sister not only leads her through the sights of Melbourne, but also the key to the one treasure she truly wants.

This is a Christian fiction book, having truths gently presented as Lily journeys through the pages.

Put this book on your Christmas list. You'll love it.

Let's Talk: If you could ask for one special gift for Christmas, what would that be?

Hello Mary. I am already a follower of yours. Hope you make it to the 200 soon. I love visiting you. I'm wondering if anyone else besides if anyone else has wondered about her coat being on backwards. It looks a little strange to me. Or, maybe I am just strange on this. I'm anxious to see why her mom is not close to her, and in her finding her twin. Hope they love each other. I can't imagine not being close to my mother, tho I've had many friends who weren't. Always sad to me. Please put my name in the drawing for Anita's book. Thanks. Maxie mac262(at)me(dot)com
Well, I don't want to tell you anymore about the story, Maxie, because I would spoil it for you. Unfortunately I am not doing a book giveaway for this post. But I sure loved chatting with you today.Have a great day.

One of my absolute favorite classes at ACFW this last year was the medical fiction class. That wasn't the real title, I can't remember what snazzy name the instructors gave it--BUT three stellar medical professionals, who are also Christian Fiction writers, presented great information then opened the time for questions. We students asked them all kinds of questions like what kind of poison would kill a ..., and tons of other questions. It was sooooo much fun, and informative.     I asked Candace, who was one of those fabulous teachers, to join us and share  how God has led her on her writing journey. Here is what she said: God Gave Me a Wake-up Fall The story won’t surprise folks who hav...

I asked Andrea to tell us how God led her on her writing journey. Here is what she said:  Romance Done Write I didn’t read much while growing up in my family’s suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin home. I read what I was assigned for school, along with an occasional children’s novel like Pippi Longstocking and Little House in the Big Woods .  When I was in fourth grade, I wrote my first novel, Little Miss Mouse . My mother kept it all these years and it’s now in my possession. I laugh when I read those ten handwritten pages. At the tim...

Fabulous Friday Feature-Lorna Seilstad

Today we welcome author: Lorna Seilstad One commenter will win a copy of Lorna's book:  As Love Blooms Scroll down to see how. Mary here. I have quickly learned what an amiable person Lorna is. After only a few emails we've become great friends and found similar things to talk about. You'll see this same spirit in her post below. I asked Lorna to tell us how God led her on her writing journey. Here is what she said:  Excuses! Excuses! Moses and I have a lot in common. Oh, I haven’t led any Egyptians out of bondage, but I have looked at the path God laid out for me and rattled off excuses that would rival those of the great spiritual leader himself. You’re probably familiar with the story. God gets Moses’ attention with a burning bush, and then when He begins to disclose his plans for Moses’ future, the excuses start. ( My paraphrase of the story:) “Moses, I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people ou...
