It seems we all must face huge trials in our life. Despite her experience, Colleen joyfully shared with me what God has done for her. I asked her to tell you how God has led her on her journey. Here is her story:

After Wandering So Long in the Wilderness

I can still remember the first story I ever wrote. It was in first grade and was about twin colts. My teacher praised my writing, and the seed was planted. Someday I would be a writer.

The seed lay dormant through the early years of marriage and raising a family. ā€œSomedayā€ I was going to write. I devoured books by the armloads from the library, and it bothered me to read the hopelessness in them that assumed there was no God. Through those years, I told God if he’d give me a story, I’d love to write from the viewpoint that he exists and cares about his children. But nothing came.

August 25, 1990 changed everything. The phone rang late that night with the news that the oldest of my three younger brothers had been killed by lightning in a freak farm accident. In the coming months, as I emerged from the storm of grief, I realized that if I was ever going to follow the dream I believed God had put in my heart, I needed to get started. I was approaching my fortieth birthday, and time was marching on.

Cambodia Elephant Ride
As part of the grieving process, my husband and I made a trip out to Wyoming to see where Randy had lived during a two-year stint. As I stood on the parade ground at Fort Laramie, the first idea took root and sprouted. The fire of grief and adversity had finally cracked open the seed that had lain dormant in my heart all those years.

It still wasn’t easy. Getting published is hard and takes work and commitment. Every time I was tempted to let the computer go dark, God whispered in my heart that I could do it. That he had given me everything I needed to go on. When a rejection came, I’d cry for a while. Then I’d pick myself back up, rework it and send it out again.

Seven years later I finally made the first sale. But God taught me about faith and perseverance through those seven years. In those days I knew no other writers. It was lonely and soul-crushing at times. I’m so thankful for American Christian Fiction Writers and other authors whose friendships I treasure now after wandering so long in that wilderness.

Looking back, I’m glad it wasn’t easier. It makes me appreciate so much more the joy and privilege I have to share my novels with my readers and to hopefully make them a little thirsty for the One who holds out a cup of living water.

Butterfly Palace

Elegance and wealth. Privilege and politics. The extravagance of the Butterfly Palace overwhelmed Lily’s senses and nearly smothered her painful memories. She pushed away her misgivings . . . She was perfectly safe in this huge house.

Austin, Texas—1904: Abandoned by the love of her life and still mourning the loss of her mother, Lily Donaldson has turned her back on the pain and come to Austin for a fresh start, working for the Marshall family as a kitchen maid in their luxurious mansion, the Butterfly Palace. The tasks before her are legion, and her mistress less than pleasant, but at least Lily’s new life will be, if nothing else, distracting.
But one night, while serving at a dinner party, Lily recognizes the man who abandoned her, Andy, her liaison from the livery stable, the blacksmith’s son . . .sitting among the distinguished guests. Though he recognizes her, Andy does not acknowledge her aloud, and Lily is left reeling, flabbergasted, and irate.

Smitten Book Club

When Heather and her fellow book club members begin passing the book around, their respective interpretations are unleashed on their respective love lives . . . for better or for worse. Is it a mystery? An idealist fantasy? An intimation of Jane Austen? As romantic love finds its way to each woman, the Guide proves itself both surprisingly prescient and hilariously irrelevant.
What’s more, a handwritten inscription indicates that the arcane book might hold the only extant clues leading to buried gold—exactly what one of the members needs to keep her house. How could they not go treasure hunting?

In this remarkable collaborative novel, besties Colleen Coble, Kristin Billerbeck, Denise Hunter, and Diann Hunt tackle the tale of the Gentlewoman’s Guide by writing for one book club member apiece. Smitten Book Club is a hopeful, hilarious story of friendship and healing, written by friends for friends.

Janice,
So nice to see you today. I will be praying for your request. To start:

Almighty Father,
Janice requests that you help her with wisdom and insight. She truly seeks to walk the path you have for her and to glorify you name in doing so. Help her to see your way and to walk steady and strong in your will.
Amen.

Hi Connie!
So glad you could come today. Sounds like you have had experiences with waiting and being open to God's guidance as well.

Your Friday blessings struck an interesting urge for me to have some ice cream. Bizarre idea with the winter storms we've been having. Guess those kid thoughts like to pop up to make us smile. What flavor ice cream do you like?

Blessings on your Friday as well.
Welcome, Patty.
So happy you were able to come today. Help yourself to some virtual hot coffee or tea and join us by the fireplace. Colleen will be her all weekend.
Feel free to call a few friends to come join us:)

Yes, I think my struggles have led me to where I am today. I feel like I'm a much better person now.

Please pray for the friends and family of a dear friend who passed away Saturday from an eight year battle with breast cancer.

Amy,
I'm so glad you stopped by. As I read your first line I sensed you inhaled deeply and released the air slowly. The added benefit to the struggles from the past is the increased endurance for future situations. They also help us to know best how to empathize with others.
That is what I will do with your right now. I am a three time cancer survivor, have been through all the processes. My journey has been 17 years so far. I will definitely pray for you as one who understands, and the friends and family of the dear friend. Let's start with this short prayer:
Loving Father,
I pray your mercy and warm embrace be given to these folks who are hurting inside. This is such a deep hurt right now. Help them to sense your comfort, feel the warmth of your love, and your concerned presence. Give them rest at night, and direction in the day.
Amen
LOL! Let's see, I'll pick Rocky Road.

Hi, Colleen and Mary!

SO enjoyed Colleen's post about her writing journey!

Yes - I can definitely say that my trials have made me who I am today! It is through the trials that I finally realized that "my" way wasn't working, and reached out for God - my life is now much happier knowing He will guide me through future trials as I do things "His" way!

I haven't read any of Colleen's books and would love to read "Butterfly Palace" - thanks for the opportunity to win a copy!!

Hi Mary. I would be glad to have some hot tea with you, and the Fireplace looks so inviting. I've been staying cold lately. Welcome to Colleen. I've been wanting this book since first seeing the cover and hearing the reviews. Colleen, you may have waited long but glad you finally made it. Sorry you didn't get to meet other writers earlier. Might have made things a little easier. Then again, maybe it just wasn't GOD's timing yet. Just keep up the good work. I just wish I had more book shelves. Wish I had a room fo just books. :) But, need to be one of those that can read a book in just a day or two. Please put my name in Mary, I am a follower. And, i have a Prayer request. My 23 year old granddaughter needs prayers badly. She's been having so many different things wrong and has had to go to ER several and they don't seem to do much except send her home with pain meds. Not try hard to find the problems. And some are getting much more serious now. We have to find a doc who will do enough tests to find her problems. Please remember her in your prayers. Bonnie,
Such wisdom. To hear you say you've learned "'my' way wasn't working and reached out for God" then you found your life happier…WOW such good words. What a blessing you have been to our chat today. I think you are really going to like reading Colleen's books. Butterfly Palace is a great place to start. :)
Looking forward to our next visit.
Good morning, Maxie. The tea water is ready. What flavor would you like?
I must agree with you that the cover for Colleen's book is very inviting. And as always, your name is put into the hat whenever you stop by.

Re: your granddaughter, I'll gladly pray. Let's start right here…
Loving Father,
You are the great healer. You know about Maxie's granddaughter's needs, especially her medical needs. We pray that you will help her to find a physician to work with on a regular basis. One that will come to know her medical situation better with a lasting relationship. Direct her to a doctor who will have the special knowledge to understand the issue and provide the information, medical treatment plan, and bedside manner to help her. Thank you for your provision, your willingness to listen to all our concerns, and your loving spirit.
Amen.

At this point in time I guess I am still going through my hard time. Yes, I see the Lord's hand in it and I know He is in control so I am just taking it one day at a time. One thing I can say though is I am glad for friends. The ones who stick with me day after day with no thought of leaving. They are such a blessing.
Thank you again for this giveaway.

Charity,
The friends are a gift from God. Since they came to your mind at this very moment it shows what treasured friends they are. Ones who provide you with the listening ear, encouragement, and etc.

Dear Jesus,
We thank you for giving Charity the best friends for this time, ones who have come to her thoughts today. We also pray that you will help Charity as she endures the hard time she is experiencing. Please provide for her needs whatever they are and show her you loving kindness.
Amen.

Thanks for joining us Charity. Looking forward to your next visit.

Suzanne Woods Fisher - Overcoming the Fear of Failure

We've all had something fail. Maybe a school assignment, baking a cake, changing a car tire. Well that was my shortlist confession. There really is a mile long list that you don't want to hear.  Talk about a quick drive to the blues. Even one negative comment in a barrel full of praises can take us down. Sigh. Why oh why do we remember the one negative one and forget the positives.  You are not alone. We all do this. But there is a way of escape. Today, Suzanne Woods Fisher is going to share her story. The Fear of Failure ā€œFor I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you. Do not fear; I will help youā€ (Isaiah 41:13, niv).              Years ago, before I received my first book contract, an editor returned a manuscript to me with the comment that the writing wasn’t up to her publishing house’s ā€œcaliber.ā€  Ouch!  That was a tough remark to swal...

A Memory Device For You

Photo Courtesy Recently I added a memory game to my week's activities.  It all started when I listened to one of those fabulous sermons in church and actually took notes. Later in the week, I recalled liking the sermon and searched for the notes, but lamented when I couldn't find the piece of paper. I quizzed myself: What was the general topic? I racked my brain…good grief this was Thursday and a thousand other things had happened when I asked the question. After a cup of tea, visualizing where I sat in the sanctuary, and using every other means possible to remember the general topic I finally answered the question.  The process to recall the rest of the good things said was an epic fail.  Although I have since started using a notebook I have created a memory game. On Monday, at any point during the day, I try to say the following without the use of my notes: General topic of the sermon Main book of the Bible used  Application p...

Laughter and Singing at the Homeless Shelter

It was a night to remember. A night to tell friends about. So I am... Fifty men, women, and teens rode in busses on icy expressways into the inner city. They poured out of the bus at a homeless shelter unsure where to go, what to do, or what to say. One led the pack through the main doors, pass security checkpoints, and on through winding hallways to a large room. At night, this room is filled, wall to wall, with cots, blankets, and at this time of year, cold homeless men, women, and children. On this evening before the night, hundreds of chairs formed straight rows and faced a platform.   The fifty set up sound and instrument equipment. Singers cozied in the limited platform space. Instrumentalists tuned their instruments.  A few residents poked their heads in the door. Intrigued, they came in and watched the first measures of several songs start, stop, start again. Microphone levels adjusted. The singers laughed. Chattered. The group stepped off to the side and...
