No Shows

We'd said we'd be there.

I knew what it felt like to be the one waiting. Assuredly the person/people didn't show because they didn't want to come in the first place.

Hours had been spent in preparation cleaning the house, cooking the meal, prepping the class material and still the person/people didn't show.

I stood at the doorway or window watching, waiting for them to come--arching my neck to look farther at the least sound. Hoping. Anticipating. Ready to welcome.

And they didn't show.

I plopped on the sofa and didn't feel like watching TV or playing on my computer. The house was clean--I had nothing to do except feel disappointed.

The glass sure looked half empty instead of half full.

This time, though, I was the one who said I'd be there. My friends didn't know what'd kept me. A family issue steeped in trials stole my attention.

That night as we stepped out of the car I could only think of how I'd disappointed my friends. Sure, I texted them and said how sorry I was--but I didn't hear back from them.

One night in the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus told His disciples to sit and wait. He asked Peter and the two sons of Zebedee to walk farther in the garden with Him. His heart weighed grievously heavy with the burden He carried. "Stay here and watch with Me," He said.

Jesus walked farther on His own. He fell to His knees and prayed. After some time, Jesus returned to His disciples and sighed. They didn't watch, they didn't wait. "Peter, couldn't you watch with me for one hour? Watch and pray."

Jesus walked back to the deeper place to pray and returned a while later to find Peter and the others asleep again. He went a third time back to His place of prayer. Jesus spoke with the Father and wept. Not long after, He returned to Peter and asked "Are you still sleeping. …Rise. Let us be going."

No matter what we've done, even if we haven't show as He expected or asked, Jesus promises to forgive. He will always welcome and invite us to go with HIm.

At times our feelings can be hurt by our friends. We look at the situation from only our point of view instead of reaching a hand out to invite the person back into our lives.

Is there someone you need to forgive, reach out to, and invited to come back into fellowship with you?

In my twenties I met a friend through my weekend retail sales position I held while a college student. She.attended my university but I was over in the building where business classes were taught and she was in education so we nnever ran into each other at svhool. Once we made plans to do something together and either there was a misunderstanding of the time and day or else she forgot. I was very disappointed and angry. I thought I would drop her from my list of friends. But then I decided to give another chance. We are still friends and now we are both 60! We have hdlped each other over the years, shared our growing faith and at times various disappointments with church. She does give me credit for helping her to develop her faith, but the credit all goes to God for He gave me something to share.
Sounds like your friendship is working out well. Thank for sharing this. Think of what would have been missed had you dropped her from your friend list. Blessings on you and your friend, Janice.

One of my absolute favorite classes at ACFW this last year was the medical fiction class. That wasn't the real title, I can't remember what snazzy name the instructors gave it--BUT three stellar medical professionals, who are also Christian Fiction writers, presented great information then opened the time for questions. We students asked them all kinds of questions like what kind of poison would kill a ..., and tons of other questions. It was sooooo much fun, and informative.     I asked Candace, who was one of those fabulous teachers, to join us and share  how God has led her on her writing journey. Here is what she said: God Gave Me a Wake-up Fall The story won’t surprise folks who hav...

I asked Andrea to tell us how God led her on her writing journey. Here is what she said:  Romance Done Write I didn’t read much while growing up in my family’s suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin home. I read what I was assigned for school, along with an occasional children’s novel like Pippi Longstocking and Little House in the Big Woods .  When I was in fourth grade, I wrote my first novel, Little Miss Mouse . My mother kept it all these years and it’s now in my possession. I laugh when I read those ten handwritten pages. At the tim...

Fabulous Friday Feature-Lorna Seilstad

Today we welcome author: Lorna Seilstad One commenter will win a copy of Lorna's book:  As Love Blooms Scroll down to see how. Mary here. I have quickly learned what an amiable person Lorna is. After only a few emails we've become great friends and found similar things to talk about. You'll see this same spirit in her post below. I asked Lorna to tell us how God led her on her writing journey. Here is what she said:  Excuses! Excuses! Moses and I have a lot in common. Oh, I haven’t led any Egyptians out of bondage, but I have looked at the path God laid out for me and rattled off excuses that would rival those of the great spiritual leader himself. You’re probably familiar with the story. God gets Moses’ attention with a burning bush, and then when He begins to disclose his plans for Moses’ future, the excuses start. ( My paraphrase of the story:) “Moses, I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people ou...
