Fabulous Friday Feature-Barbara Phinney

Barbara stood at the edge of the 3rd largest canyon near
Kruger National Park in South Africa. She and her
daughter had fun taking selfies to remember this moment.
Today I welcome author:
Barbara Phinney

I enjoy meeting authors. Right from our first communication, I sensed Barbara's sweet spirit and have enjoyed getting to know her better over the past several months. I asked Barbara to share with us how God has led her on her writing journey. This is what she said:

LOOKING BACK AT HOW RIGHT GOD HAS BEEN

How has God led my writing journey? That is actually a difficult question to answer. I have always loved writing romance, but it wasn't until I received a few rejections from my publisher that God took over. You see, my editor called me and asked me if I would like to write for a different line. Instantly, I answered, "How about Love Inspired?"
I hadn't considered Love Inspired at all until that moment. My editor lit up like a Christmas tree. She thought that was a wonderful idea. Then it hit me. "Love Inspired? Can I write that kind of book?"
I prayed, asking for God’s guidance, and as I began to put together a synopsis, I knew I could write one. Love Inspired has a long list of requirements that can deter a lot of writers. Not me, though. I found I had no trouble writing inside that fence. All right, there have been times I nibbled at the grass on the other side, but not to worry, my editor reined me in!
After having five Love Inspired Suspense books published, I wanted to switch to writing historicals. I'd been to Colchester, England, and fell in love with the Norman period. Its foundation is still strong there. I’d always loved the genre, so I submitted a medieval story. This was a rather large risk because many historical readers prefer Midwestern, Victorian, or Pre-War stories. While Medievals are not as popular as they were when I was a new writer, God helped me write a wonderful tale that my Christian agent loved and passed on to my editor. She also loved it. I received a contract for two more books. Thus, my Warrior series was born!

I still look back and marvel at how subtle and how right God has been in my writing journey.

Barbara enjoys creative activities, and with her grown children having left the nest, she's getting even more creative. She has written romance for over 10 years, mostly with Harlequin, and enjoys writing suspenseful stories that inspire, uplift and entertain.

Barbara lives with her husband and some barn cats in Southern New Brunswick, Canada and plans to travel and write even more.

Barbara's new release: Protected by the Warrior
FOR HONOR'S SAKE
When Clara became a midwife, she vowed to preserve life above all. She'll keep that vow, even if it means defying a Norman baron by hiding a Saxon slave and her child. Yet when the ruthless lord threatens Clara's village—and her life—she's forced to rely on another Norman to keep her safe.
Kenneth D'Entremont is a soldier, one who takes lives instead of healing them. Clara despairs of finding any common ground with him. But when he begins guarding her, she learns to see him in a new light. His care and compassion make her feel safe…even loved. Can she bring herself to put her secrets, and her heart, under the protection of the warrior?

Sometimes we fall into a rut with what we are doing. We feel God nudging us in another direction and wonder if this is what we should be doing. Like riding against the waves to get to the best serf. Barbara found her best serf and seems to be enjoying the ride!

Reader, Take a moment to leave Barbara a word of encouragement

And me a howdie-do, I love to chat with you.

Good morning Mary, I haven't been able to visit for awhile and I have enjoyed meeting Barbara. I I loved reading about her new book; it reminds me of baby Moses and his story.
Blessings to both of you!

Mary, thank you for this look at new-to-me-author Barbara Phinney! This new Warrior series looks like a good read, and one my middle daughter would also enjoy! How exciting to have traveled to so many places, Barbara! I'm sure that comes in handy with your writing at some time or another. I hope you'll get to travel more!
Thank you for the interview, the giveaway and the chance to win!
Blessings!

Good morning, Connie.
Yes, life gets a bit busy. Still, I'm so glad you came today. I agree with your idea that the book sounds like Moses's story. I love reading stories like this, don't you?
Kelly,
Good morning! I think a high complement to any author is to hear a book reaches beyond the intended audience!
Have you been able to travel? Is this a bucket list hope? If so, I sure hope you get a chance to travel to someplace special, like Barbara did.

Good morning! I'm so glad to see a spotlight on a Christian Medieval book, I wish there were more of them! I've read Barbara's first book in this series and really enjoyed it!
Barbara: Is the hero in book 2 one of Adrien's soldiers from book 1?
Thanks for this post...I'd be afraid to pet an ostrich, too :)
Oh and I follow your blog via email :)

This is a new era to read about for me! Thanks for having Barbara share a bit about her writing journey.

Lis,
So nice to see you today. Yes, there aren't many Medieval Christian books available. It seems not many are published. I've heard publishers say there isn't a market. But here we can see there are readers interested in this genre. What a nice treat to find Barbara's book.
Thanks you so much for following my blog, Lis.
You're welcome, Patty.
I love checking out new eras. Sometimes I have to work past my desire to not live then to really appreciate the wonderful story crafted in the period. Truly, I would not like to live during the Medieval times. I like my hot showers, a warm house, etc. Now that I've said that, I can delve into someone else's journey and weep or cheer with them. :)
Good to see you again, Patty.

Hi, I just got home after a wonderful mini holiday in New Hampshire. I'm so excited to read all these posts.
Connie, what a wonderful thing to say! I hadn't considered Moses, but you are so right!
Kelly, I love to travel. We just got back from New Hampshire and the people were so friendly there! But we don't plan on traveling for a bit as our children are coming home for Christmas.
Lis, yes, Kenneth, my hero in Book 2 is the one who was in book 1. I loved the scene where he helped Ediva minister to a sick Adrien. I still giggle at that scene.
Patty, thank you for stopping by!
I love medieval stories, and it's crazy to think that editors believe there isn't a market. I hear time and again from people who love them. We need to start a letter writing campaign to get them back!!
Thank you all for posting, and good luck.

Good morning, Mary! My middle daughter (16) aspires to be a published author one day... and loves the medieval time period... thus I know she would love this book! She is always reading or writing, in between some schoolwork and a part-time job. lol!
I haven't traveled a lot. My husband is retired Navy so we did travel some. He did a tour in Iceland, where we lived for five years. Our oldest two were born there, with number three on the way when we moved back stateside. We took a large vacation just before he retired... OH, WI, MT, WY, ND, CO, NM, MO, then back home to VA. It was a big loop, much fun, many sights visited, and one I'm sure our four Gifts will remember. As for more traveling, I don't really have a desire, but my husband hopes to own an RV when he retires again, so thinking it will be in my future! lol!
Blessings... and Happy Thanksgiving!
Kelly
I'm so glad to hear about your daughters aspirations to be a published author and enjoys medieval time periods. Our interests are very similar. I've written a fantasy medieval story that I hope will one day be published, in the mean time I, too continue to read and write.

Iceland must have been an exciting place to live. I know the winters get very dark that far north, but what were the summers like? Did you like it there? We lived in Montana for five years. I absolutely loved it there.

That vacation of yours sounds exciting. There were so many things for you to see!! The Mississippi, Grand Canyon, Rockies, Mt. Rushmore....The list is long! I bet you have some great memories of that trip.

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and that you get to spend it with family.

Suzanne Woods Fisher - Overcoming the Fear of Failure

We've all had something fail. Maybe a school assignment, baking a cake, changing a car tire. Well that was my shortlist confession. There really is a mile long list that you don't want to hear.  Talk about a quick drive to the blues. Even one negative comment in a barrel full of praises can take us down. Sigh. Why oh why do we remember the one negative one and forget the positives.  You are not alone. We all do this. But there is a way of escape. Today, Suzanne Woods Fisher is going to share her story. The Fear of Failure ā€œFor I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you. Do not fear; I will help youā€ (Isaiah 41:13, niv).              Years ago, before I received my first book contract, an editor returned a manuscript to me with the comment that the writing wasn’t up to her publishing house’s ā€œcaliber.ā€  Ouch!  That was a tough remark to swal...

A Memory Device For You

Photo Courtesy Recently I added a memory game to my week's activities.  It all started when I listened to one of those fabulous sermons in church and actually took notes. Later in the week, I recalled liking the sermon and searched for the notes, but lamented when I couldn't find the piece of paper. I quizzed myself: What was the general topic? I racked my brain…good grief this was Thursday and a thousand other things had happened when I asked the question. After a cup of tea, visualizing where I sat in the sanctuary, and using every other means possible to remember the general topic I finally answered the question.  The process to recall the rest of the good things said was an epic fail.  Although I have since started using a notebook I have created a memory game. On Monday, at any point during the day, I try to say the following without the use of my notes: General topic of the sermon Main book of the Bible used  Application p...

Laughter and Singing at the Homeless Shelter

It was a night to remember. A night to tell friends about. So I am... Fifty men, women, and teens rode in busses on icy expressways into the inner city. They poured out of the bus at a homeless shelter unsure where to go, what to do, or what to say. One led the pack through the main doors, pass security checkpoints, and on through winding hallways to a large room. At night, this room is filled, wall to wall, with cots, blankets, and at this time of year, cold homeless men, women, and children. On this evening before the night, hundreds of chairs formed straight rows and faced a platform.   The fifty set up sound and instrument equipment. Singers cozied in the limited platform space. Instrumentalists tuned their instruments.  A few residents poked their heads in the door. Intrigued, they came in and watched the first measures of several songs start, stop, start again. Microphone levels adjusted. The singers laughed. Chattered. The group stepped off to the side and...
