I enjoy meeting authors. Right from our first communication, I sensed Barbara's sweet spirit and have enjoyed getting to know her better over the past several months. I asked Barbara to share with us how God has led her on her writing journey. This is what she said:
LOOKING BACK AT HOW RIGHT GOD HAS BEEN
How has God
led my writing journey? That is actually a difficult question to answer. I have
always loved writing romance, but it wasn't until I received a few rejections
from my publisher that God took over. You see, my editor called me and asked me
if I would like to write for a different line. Instantly, I answered, "How
about Love Inspired?"
I hadn't
considered Love Inspired at all until that moment. My editor lit up like a
Christmas tree. She thought that was a wonderful idea. Then it hit me. "Love
Inspired? Can I write that kind of book?"
I prayed,
asking for God’s guidance, and as I began to put together a synopsis, I knew I
could write one. Love Inspired has a long list of requirements that can deter a
lot of writers. Not me, though. I found I had no trouble writing inside that
fence. All right, there have been times I nibbled at the grass on the other
side, but not to worry, my editor reined me in!
After having
five Love Inspired Suspense books published, I wanted to switch to writing
historicals. I'd been to Colchester, England, and fell in love with the Norman
period. Its foundation is still strong there. I’d always loved the genre, so I
submitted a medieval story. This was a rather large risk because many
historical readers prefer Midwestern, Victorian, or Pre-War stories. While
Medievals are not as popular as they were when I was a new writer, God helped
me write a wonderful tale that my Christian agent loved and passed on to my
editor. She also loved it. I received a contract for two more books. Thus, my
Warrior series was born!
I still look back and
marvel at how subtle and how right God has been in my writing journey.

Sometimes we fall into a rut with what we are doing. We feel God nudging us in another direction and wonder if this is what we should be doing. Like riding against the waves to get to the best serf. Barbara found her best serf and seems to be enjoying the ride!

Good morning! I think a high complement to any author is to hear a book reaches beyond the intended audience!
Have you been able to travel? Is this a bucket list hope? If so, I sure hope you get a chance to travel to someplace special, like Barbara did.

So nice to see you today. Yes, there aren't many Medieval Christian books available. It seems not many are published. I've heard publishers say there isn't a market. But here we can see there are readers interested in this genre. What a nice treat to find Barbara's book.

I love checking out new eras. Sometimes I have to work past my desire to not live then to really appreciate the wonderful story crafted in the period. Truly, I would not like to live during the Medieval times. I like my hot showers, a warm house, etc. Now that I've said that, I can delve into someone else's journey and weep or cheer with them. :)

Kelly, I love to travel. We just got back from New Hampshire and the people were so friendly there! But we don't plan on traveling for a bit as our children are coming home for Christmas.
Lis, yes, Kenneth, my hero in Book 2 is the one who was in book 1. I loved the scene where he helped Ediva minister to a sick Adrien. I still giggle at that scene.

I love medieval stories, and it's crazy to think that editors believe there isn't a market. I hear time and again from people who love them. We need to start a letter writing campaign to get them back!!

I haven't traveled a lot. My husband is retired Navy so we did travel some. He did a tour in Iceland, where we lived for five years. Our oldest two were born there, with number three on the way when we moved back stateside. We took a large vacation just before he retired... OH, WI, MT, WY, ND, CO, NM, MO, then back home to VA. It was a big loop, much fun, many sights visited, and one I'm sure our four Gifts will remember. As for more traveling, I don't really have a desire, but my husband hopes to own an RV when he retires again, so thinking it will be in my future! lol!

Iceland must have been an exciting place to live. I know the winters get very dark that far north, but what were the summers like? Did you like it there? We lived in Montana for five years. I absolutely loved it there.
That vacation of yours sounds exciting. There were so many things for you to see!! The Mississippi, Grand Canyon, Rockies, Mt. Rushmore....The list is long! I bet you have some great memories of that trip.
