The Importance of a Great Review-How Was Your Valentines Day?

Recently, I've read comments from authors regarding book reviews.

Apparently, the more book reviews there are for a book, the greater publicity it gets from Amazon, Google, Goodreads, etc.

I haven't received a book contract, but some day I hope to. That is the day I'll understand the great importance to this concern.

For now, I'm going to look at the topic from a slightly different point of view, make that two different point of views and discuss how this concern can be relevant to us today.

1st. How was your Valentines? Did you get something special? Did you give something special. Did you spend time with someone special?

Somehow I think that if the answer to any of the above was yes, you would have found a way to express your gratitude, maybe by saying thank you, giving a hug or a kiss. Even after the gift was received these three days later, you remember the wonderful feeling you had when receiving the token and want to share your news with others.

Yeah, me too. We can't help it. The token made us feel special and we want to give back in some way.

When you share with me your sweet news, I share with you my sweet news. We get new ideas from each other and create super ideas for next year.

This is what happens with the reviews for authors. I take the time to write a review about a book I've read. You see it. Read it. And say, I think I'd like to read this book. You and I reach people the author may not even know. The more books the author sells, the more books they'll be asked to write--the more you and I will have to read.

Which brings me to:

2nd.  The best ever book written is the Bible. God, as you know, is the author. The purpose of the Bible is to use it as a tool to get to know God better. He wrote about every aspect we need AND included examples! He used poetry, narrative, parables, dialogue, included what is to happen in the future. WOW! Nothing can compare.

Like Valentines, reading God's Word can draw many responses from us. We learn about the perfect love story, a God who cares so deeply for his creation He is willing to give the greatest gift so we can live with Him.

When we allow God to love us, we are compelled to share what He has done for us, His selfless gift of love.

Reading the Bible helps us to understand this love.

God wants us to share what we've learned in His word. It's a form of review. We tell others what we've read and this in turn compels those we've told to pick up a copy and read.

I didn't know an author gets more publicity with the more reviews but I have read books from new authors due to high ranking reviews.

We actually went camping this Valentines with my children.
Really enjoyed your post today and how important it is to share God's word.

Thank you, Mary, for this topic and your thoughts. I have seen book reviews for specialty Bibles that I was considering buying, but your post reminded me that I have never seen a review for The Bible in general. Very thoughtful insights about how we are to share it. I think that is what I am doing with my daily posts and photos on Twitter. :-)
Thank you, Grace. I hope you all stayed warm while camping.
I didn't really "get" the value of the reviews either before reading the recent comments. I'm going to try harder to get review up for the authors. It's a great way to say thank you.
In a way, that's what we're doing when we share the Gospel...we're saying thank you to God.
Good idea, Janice!
God has shared His world with us. The least we can do is give Him the honor. I'm so glad you stopped by today.

Hello Mary. I enjoyed this post very much. And every word is true. Especially about the BIBLE, GOD's word. I've heard so many people say even when they read the same chapters they have read, they usually learn something new. I was by myself but saw one daughter just before and she did some work for me, and took me out to eat. Another brought me a card and box of candy on SUN. A beautiful card in the mail from my son. So was good. GOD bless you Mary. Maxie > mac262(at)me(dot)com

I forgot to say that I picked up a package of Milano cookies, orange/chocolate filled to share with my husband for a Valentine's treat. I had wanted to make his favorite orange chocolate chip cookies, but it was better to just buy the small package of cookies for the benefit of fewer calories.
Oh, Maxie, sounds like you had an absolutely lovely Valentines Day. I'm so happy for you.

When I tell a Bible story to kids, I don't read a script from a company, I reread the Scripture portion. I am so amazed at what I see new that applies to kids...and to me. God is so good. Always teaching us.
You're sneaky, sensitive, and sweet Janice. You gave him what he likes and yet thought of his health. Awesome.

Suzanne Woods Fisher - Overcoming the Fear of Failure

We've all had something fail. Maybe a school assignment, baking a cake, changing a car tire. Well that was my shortlist confession. There really is a mile long list that you don't want to hear.  Talk about a quick drive to the blues. Even one negative comment in a barrel full of praises can take us down. Sigh. Why oh why do we remember the one negative one and forget the positives.  You are not alone. We all do this. But there is a way of escape. Today, Suzanne Woods Fisher is going to share her story. The Fear of Failure ā€œFor I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you. Do not fear; I will help youā€ (Isaiah 41:13, niv).              Years ago, before I received my first book contract, an editor returned a manuscript to me with the comment that the writing wasn’t up to her publishing house’s ā€œcaliber.ā€  Ouch!  That was a tough remark to swal...

A Memory Device For You

Photo Courtesy Recently I added a memory game to my week's activities.  It all started when I listened to one of those fabulous sermons in church and actually took notes. Later in the week, I recalled liking the sermon and searched for the notes, but lamented when I couldn't find the piece of paper. I quizzed myself: What was the general topic? I racked my brain…good grief this was Thursday and a thousand other things had happened when I asked the question. After a cup of tea, visualizing where I sat in the sanctuary, and using every other means possible to remember the general topic I finally answered the question.  The process to recall the rest of the good things said was an epic fail.  Although I have since started using a notebook I have created a memory game. On Monday, at any point during the day, I try to say the following without the use of my notes: General topic of the sermon Main book of the Bible used  Application p...

Laughter and Singing at the Homeless Shelter

It was a night to remember. A night to tell friends about. So I am... Fifty men, women, and teens rode in busses on icy expressways into the inner city. They poured out of the bus at a homeless shelter unsure where to go, what to do, or what to say. One led the pack through the main doors, pass security checkpoints, and on through winding hallways to a large room. At night, this room is filled, wall to wall, with cots, blankets, and at this time of year, cold homeless men, women, and children. On this evening before the night, hundreds of chairs formed straight rows and faced a platform.   The fifty set up sound and instrument equipment. Singers cozied in the limited platform space. Instrumentalists tuned their instruments.  A few residents poked their heads in the door. Intrigued, they came in and watched the first measures of several songs start, stop, start again. Microphone levels adjusted. The singers laughed. Chattered. The group stepped off to the side and...
