Ten Seconds

Ten seconds.

Depending on the scenario ten ticks on a second hand can seem like an eternity or a gasp.

Olympic races have been won in a fraction of one second.

Many of us have watched the clock anxious for the last ten seconds to finally pass at the end of a work shift.

We either wait...for what seems like an eternity for ten seconds to pass or we blink and realize it vaporized.

In either case, most of us think nothing of great value can be done in a mere ten seconds.

I would have been the first to agree with you...until two rival football teams played last weekend.

I love football. I'm even okay with rooting for the best play instead of a given team.

This particular game (University of Michigan vs Michigan State University) was the unforgettable game.

Inundated with unusual referee calls, conservative enforcement of a new rule, sideline refs calling touchdowns that were overturned several times...over 1/2 inch. Yah.

Still, all in all the score was very tight and the game exciting. One team barely ahead of the other. The leader had the ball and ten seconds left on the clock. There was no way the team behind could get the ball AND make a touch down before the game ended.

EVERYONE KNEW IT

Both sides.

THEN

The play was called, the ball was snapped. The special team punt kicker held the ball...almost. It tumbled from his hands to the ground. Not a problem. He rushed to pick it up and positioned himself to kick the ball far down the field.

EXCEPT

The team behind broke through the line at the very moment the kicker set the ball to kick. The kicker inadvertently tossed the ball to the behind team in the process. The behind team secured the ball in their grasp and, in the remaining seconds, ran the ball for a touchdown. The behind team won the game.

The fans on both sides were stunned. The once leading fans stared in disbelief. The once behind team cheered their player to the end zone.

The unbelievable happened.

In ten seconds.

I can't heat a cup of tea in ten seconds.
I can't fill my gas tank in ten seconds.
I can't make my family's dinner, do the laundry, wash the dishes, vacuum the floor, or write a blog in ten seconds.

BUT, I can plant a God Loves You seed in the heart of a person in ten seconds. I can give a hug. Listen. Wipe a tear. Say a prayer...

In ten seconds.

Your turn.

You have been given ten extra seconds. What will you do?

I once told a friend a Bible verse to remember when she is anxious. It is about a ten second comfort verse: "Cast your cares upon the Lord for He cares for you." In those words, God heart reveals His love and concern.

Thank you, Mary, for your encouragement through your words to fully live an abundant life...ten seconds at a time. It all adds up to life in Him!

Make that, "God's heart."

Great blog post, Mary. 10 seconds is huge in God's eyes. Good verse and application, Janice. :)
Tchier,
Thanks for joining our chat today! May God continue to bless you each and every day.

Great Bible verse. This brings to mind that about any Bible verse could be said in ten seconds, if we know it well. I just timed myself to see if I could say John 3:16 in ten seconds without rushing the words. I could. Great thought, Janice. Thanks.
I agree. Think of all God has done in 10 seconds. Of course, His timing is perfect and therefore uses more time for other things. We are so blessed by a loving God.

Suzanne Woods Fisher - Overcoming the Fear of Failure

We've all had something fail. Maybe a school assignment, baking a cake, changing a car tire. Well that was my shortlist confession. There really is a mile long list that you don't want to hear.  Talk about a quick drive to the blues. Even one negative comment in a barrel full of praises can take us down. Sigh. Why oh why do we remember the one negative one and forget the positives.  You are not alone. We all do this. But there is a way of escape. Today, Suzanne Woods Fisher is going to share her story. The Fear of Failure ā€œFor I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you. Do not fear; I will help youā€ (Isaiah 41:13, niv).              Years ago, before I received my first book contract, an editor returned a manuscript to me with the comment that the writing wasn’t up to her publishing house’s ā€œcaliber.ā€  Ouch!  That was a tough remark to swal...

A Memory Device For You

Photo Courtesy Recently I added a memory game to my week's activities.  It all started when I listened to one of those fabulous sermons in church and actually took notes. Later in the week, I recalled liking the sermon and searched for the notes, but lamented when I couldn't find the piece of paper. I quizzed myself: What was the general topic? I racked my brain…good grief this was Thursday and a thousand other things had happened when I asked the question. After a cup of tea, visualizing where I sat in the sanctuary, and using every other means possible to remember the general topic I finally answered the question.  The process to recall the rest of the good things said was an epic fail.  Although I have since started using a notebook I have created a memory game. On Monday, at any point during the day, I try to say the following without the use of my notes: General topic of the sermon Main book of the Bible used  Application p...

Laughter and Singing at the Homeless Shelter

It was a night to remember. A night to tell friends about. So I am... Fifty men, women, and teens rode in busses on icy expressways into the inner city. They poured out of the bus at a homeless shelter unsure where to go, what to do, or what to say. One led the pack through the main doors, pass security checkpoints, and on through winding hallways to a large room. At night, this room is filled, wall to wall, with cots, blankets, and at this time of year, cold homeless men, women, and children. On this evening before the night, hundreds of chairs formed straight rows and faced a platform.   The fifty set up sound and instrument equipment. Singers cozied in the limited platform space. Instrumentalists tuned their instruments.  A few residents poked their heads in the door. Intrigued, they came in and watched the first measures of several songs start, stop, start again. Microphone levels adjusted. The singers laughed. Chattered. The group stepped off to the side and...
