I was watching a rerun* last week and was surprised to hear one character comfort another with an updated version of the Good Samaritan.
Something terrible had happened to the second character in this show. He was very concerned he might get fired. The first character heard the news and called him into his office. He told the second character this story:
There once was a man who fell into a deep hole. The walls were smooth. He turned and found no way out. "Help," he called to anyone who might hear.
A doctor stopped at the opening and saw the trapped man. The man said, "Hey, Doc can you help me out?" The doctor wrote a prescription, tossed it into the hole, and walked away.
A priest stopped at the hole. He looked down. The man said, "Priest, can you hep me out?" The priest spoke a prayer then left.
A third man stopped when he heard the cry for help. He looked down the hole. The man looked up and recognized his friend. "Hey friend, can you help me out?" The friend sat on the edge of the hole then jumped in.
"Why did you do that?" The trapped man asked. "Now we're both stuck down here."
"Not really. I've been here before. I know the way out."
The first character said, "As long as I have a job, so do you."
I paused the show--so amazed at the truth. This was the Good Samaritan story updated!
Jesus has been here. He knows what it's like to experience trials, hunger, rejection, etc. The best part of his life--He not only knew the way, He MADE the way of escape for us.
If you're struggling, afraid of what might happen today or tomorrow, Jesus is here. He is by your side--and He knows the way of escape. The answer may not be what you want, but He has promised to be here for us and to give help.
