Mary here. I have a blessing for you. Sarah Thomas is such a fun person. The post below shows her sense of humor AND God's blessing in a seven-year overnight success. Take the time to read this amazing blessing from God.
I'm beyond happy to welcome Sarah today. I asked her, How has God led you on your writing journey? Here is what he said:

The Seven-Year Overnight Success

From the outside, most any writer’s path to publication can look like an overnight success. I was blessed to find an agent in November of 2012, sign with a publisher the following spring, and see my first book on shelves about a year later in 2014.

Fast in the publishing world.

To many, it probably looked like I burst upon the scene, suddenly catapulting from anonymity to publication.

Except my “overnight” success took a good seven years. I decided to write a book around 2006. And I wrote and I piddled and I fiddled and I wrote a little bit more. After three years or so I had a manuscript and man, I was ready to go to print. I mean, how hard could that be? I’d finished the hard part.

So I read some blogs and did the bare minimum of research. I even let my close friends read the manuscript and edited it a little. And eventually, I decided I was READY.

So I went to a conference (2010) and I made appointments with editors, because I figured if I could get an editor, then an agent would be easy. Skip to the front of the line! And I ran up against some very nice people who were encouraging. Yup, they encouraged me to learn more about writing and the publishing process.

So I did. And at the second conference (2011), I met with agents, because I figured that’s a better place to begin. And they were pretty encouraging. But no one wanted the full manuscript. Although they did say to keep writing, I had promise. So I started working on a second book.

And I went to another conference (2012) and met with whoever wanted to talk to me. Editors, agents, other authors–feedback, please! And I continued to get encouragement, but still no requests to read the full novel. Sigh.

Meanwhile I had finished the second book and polished it up and got some great feedback through other writers as well as paid critiques and contests. I sent a query to Wendy Lawton at Books & Such Literary Management. She asked for a proposal.

And then she asked for the full manuscript. Really? She really wanted to read the WHOLE thing?!?

And then, seven or so years after I thought to myself, I’d like to write a book, I got an agent. That was November 20, 2012.

Then things DID happen quickly (for this industry!) with a contract and a cover and a publication date of August 5, 2014. Let’s see, a book on the shelf a mere NINE YEARS after I started writing seriously.

So often we look at other people’s lives and their “overnight” successes and feel a little envious. My writing journey didn’t happen overnight and I’m betting most journeys take these more winding paths. But as long as I’m walking with God, the scenic route is just fine with me!

What is the weight of a secret?
And what happens when that burden becomes almost too much to bear?

For decades, Perla Phillips has hidden the truth of a decision that still fills her with guilt. But now, seeing her granddaughter, Ella, struggle in a similar way, she's prepared to finally open the past to her family, no matter the consequences. But when the opportunity is snatched from her in a most unexpected manner, will she have waited too long?

Spanning generations, this moving family drama weaves together the interlocking stories of two women as they navigate relationships, family, faith, and the choices that will shape their lives. Heartwarming and nostalgic, the story explores the courage to share the wounds of the past and celebrates the legacy a family passes from one generation to the next.

Mary, you are so right. It has been a blessing to read about Sarah's journey to becoming a published and acclaimed author. Aren't we lucky that she persisted and allowed God to take her on the "scenic route"? Shouldn't we all accept that while our life journey may have twists, turns, and bad decisions we can still reach out desired goal IF He is present?
Sarah, I wish you continued success and Mary, I continue to appreciate your efforts to share your fantastic author chats with all of us.
Happy Friday and Happy Weekend!
Blessings to both of you.

Connie,
I agree. AND what I liked was her attitude that seven years was equal to an overnight success. I found myself laughing at the way she communicated this journey, didn't you? Doesn't it make you want to grab a couple of her books and have some fun. I do. Love chatting with you, Connie :)

Interesting interview with the detailed chronology in the quest to become published! Among other things, I very much enjoy the background/location of the stories as several lines of my family, who came to the US in the 1600's and 1700's, lived/live in the region.
Quest is a great word. Truer words could not be spoken.
Wow! Not many people know their genealogies back three-four hundred years. My husband knows his, but mine aren't so readily available. Such history in your family. Imagine the stories that could be told. Thanks so much for joining Sarah and me today. It was nice chatting with you.

Genealogy has been a hobby for about ten years, and you might have more opportunity doing research now as so much more information has been transcribed and digitized in the last few years. You might check/Google Familysearch.
Thanks for the suggestion, Cathy :)

Today we welcome author:  Candace Calvert To win a copy of Candace's new release: By Your Side Scroll to the end of the post  to see how to get your copy. Mary Vee here. One of my absolute favorite classes at ACFW this last year was the medical fiction class. That wasn't the real title, I can't remember what snazzy name the instructors gave it--BUT three stellar medical professionals, who are also Christian Fiction writers, presented great information then opened the time for questions. We students asked them all kinds of questions like what kind of poison would kill a ..., and tons of other questions. It was sooooo much fun, and informative.     I asked Candace, who was one of those fabulous teachers, to join us and share  how God has led her on her writing journey. Here is what she said: God Gave Me a Wake-up Fall The story won’t surprise folks who hav...

Today we welcome author: Andrea Boeshaar Three commenters will win a copy of Andrea's book:  A Thousand Shall Fall Scroll down to see how. Mary here. Andrea has had an amazing journey. One many of us can relate to. Her post below shows her strength and positive spirit. I'm so happy Andrea is visiting with us today. Pull up a chair, grab your coffee and come chat with Andrea. I asked Andrea to tell us how God led her on her writing journey. Here is what she said:  Romance Done Write I didn’t read much while growing up in my family’s suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin home. I read what I was assigned for school, along with an occasional children’s novel like Pippi Longstocking and Little House in the Big Woods .  When I was in fourth grade, I wrote my first novel, Little Miss Mouse . My mother kept it all these years and it’s now in my possession. I laugh when I read those ten handwritten pages. At the tim...

Fabulous Friday Feature-Lorna Seilstad

Today we welcome author: Lorna Seilstad One commenter will win a copy of Lorna's book:  As Love Blooms Scroll down to see how. Mary here. I have quickly learned what an amiable person Lorna is. After only a few emails we've become great friends and found similar things to talk about. You'll see this same spirit in her post below. I asked Lorna to tell us how God led her on her writing journey. Here is what she said:  Excuses! Excuses! Moses and I have a lot in common. Oh, I haven’t led any Egyptians out of bondage, but I have looked at the path God laid out for me and rattled off excuses that would rival those of the great spiritual leader himself. You’re probably familiar with the story. God gets Moses’ attention with a burning bush, and then when He begins to disclose his plans for Moses’ future, the excuses start. ( My paraphrase of the story:) “Moses, I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people ou...
