Yah Know, Family Done Projects Are The Best

When our kids were wee-little, a family tradition was started.

We all went to a U-pick and gathered strawberries, or raspberries, or blueberries, or apples.

This was a 1/2 day event.

Back at home, sticky fingers and faces were cleaned, prickles removed from clothing, and stained shirts tossed in the washer.

With clean play clothes on, we gathered around the dining room table and cleaned the fruit. It took a few stains on the wood table to figure out we needed a plastic cloth under our work. Afterwards, sticky fingers and faces were washed again, stained shirts tossed in the washer, and berries put in the fridge.

The next day, kids, hubby and I took turns stirring the fruit in the pot,

pouring in sugar,

filling jars, sealing them and turning them upside-down for the 24-hour wait.

Except this family is not good at waiting. During the cooking process, one jar was set aside as the left over jar. The last teaspoons from each batch and a smidgeon of that yummy foam filled the jar. It was left on the counter along with a loaf of bread and a table knife for taste testers and quality control managers. Spoils of war.

This year, only one adult child was available for the family canning day. But, the other two called and said we had to save them each a jar.

I must admit, I've never tasted homemade raspberry, blueberry, strawberry, or apple preserves as good as ours. You could say the same about whatever your family does together, right? Projects are the best when the family gets together. Yep.

I get the same feeling and see the same results when Christian friends gather together for a job. Whether it's writing, singing, VBS, cooking, cleaning, fixing up the church, whatever...doesn't it just seem like the project is fun, that you've spent your day well, that you really got so much more out of the job than work...because you had time with family biological and Spiritual.

Let's extend this one step deeper. God, as our Father loves to see His kids together. Sometimes He has to orchestrate the need for the gathering because we are too busy. At each gathering, God is there. In Zephaniah 3:17 God tells us He joys over us with singing. Isn't that too awesome for words? Takes your breath away just thinking about it, doesn't it?

Yeah. Me too.

Our God has created an awesome family. And family times...are the memory makers, and the heart warmers, and the ... what good feelings are made of.

So...make some plans to have family fun. Biological or spiritual. God will be there laughing, consoling, and singing with you. Have fun.

Good Morning Mary. Your ‘Post’ is a wonderful way to begin my day. Thank you. Being a city girl since birth I have not personally had the wonderful experiences you described in your ‘Post’. Through your sharing and the style of your writing, vicariously, I am able to share your experience. Hope that you have a great day.
Thanks, Mary. I suppose I could also do a city one. Have I told you about our crazy family adventure to New York City? Good think God had our backs for that one.

No, Mary you haven't. At some point I would like to hear about this. I suspect it was, at the very least, quite interesting.
Sounds like I have my idea for next week. Thanks :)

One of my absolute favorite classes at ACFW this last year was the medical fiction class. That wasn't the real title, I can't remember what snazzy name the instructors gave it--BUT three stellar medical professionals, who are also Christian Fiction writers, presented great information then opened the time for questions. We students asked them all kinds of questions like what kind of poison would kill a ..., and tons of other questions. It was sooooo much fun, and informative.     I asked Candace, who was one of those fabulous teachers, to join us and share  how God has led her on her writing journey. Here is what she said: God Gave Me a Wake-up Fall The story won’t surprise folks who hav...

I asked Andrea to tell us how God led her on her writing journey. Here is what she said:  Romance Done Write I didn’t read much while growing up in my family’s suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin home. I read what I was assigned for school, along with an occasional children’s novel like Pippi Longstocking and Little House in the Big Woods .  When I was in fourth grade, I wrote my first novel, Little Miss Mouse . My mother kept it all these years and it’s now in my possession. I laugh when I read those ten handwritten pages. At the tim...

Fabulous Friday Feature-Lorna Seilstad

Today we welcome author: Lorna Seilstad One commenter will win a copy of Lorna's book:  As Love Blooms Scroll down to see how. Mary here. I have quickly learned what an amiable person Lorna is. After only a few emails we've become great friends and found similar things to talk about. You'll see this same spirit in her post below. I asked Lorna to tell us how God led her on her writing journey. Here is what she said:  Excuses! Excuses! Moses and I have a lot in common. Oh, I haven’t led any Egyptians out of bondage, but I have looked at the path God laid out for me and rattled off excuses that would rival those of the great spiritual leader himself. You’re probably familiar with the story. God gets Moses’ attention with a burning bush, and then when He begins to disclose his plans for Moses’ future, the excuses start. ( My paraphrase of the story:) “Moses, I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people ou...
